First cryogenic test campaign on the Ariel primary mirror completed

The first set of tests on the primary mirror of the ESA Ariel mission, carried out in the laboratories of INAF – Osservatorio Astronomico di Palermo, has been successfully completed. The results show how this innovative mirror behaves at the low temperatures expected during the mission, and have already been presented to the Ariel Consortium, receiving positive feedback from ESA and ASI as well.

The team during the cryogenic test campaign on the Ariel M1 mirror

The mirror, about one metre across and made entirely of aluminium alloy, is an innovative solution developed by the Italian Ariel Telescope Assembly team. Interferometric measurements taken during the tests, with the mirror cooled down to about −116 °C (157 K), showed a behaviour consistent with numerical predictions under the test conditions achieved. These results provide a first experimental confirmation of the expected performance and help reduce the technological risks of this solution. The campaign also verified the operation of the Cryo-Facility and of the whole experimental chain developed at the Observatory. Work will continue with the analysis of the results and the next test campaigns foreseen by the programme.

This achievement is the result of the work of the many Observatory teams involved in designing and building the Cryo-Facility and in preparing and running the test campaign.

Exploring the radial velocity variations of RY Lup with VLT/ESPRESSO: binary versus spot hypotheses

Stellar multiplicity may lead to substructures in protoplanetary discs, since the tidal forces of a close spectroscopic companion can carve gaps and shape the disc architecture. In young, active systems, however, radial velocity (RV) signals are often complicated by stellar activity. In this study we investigate RY Lup, a classical T Tauri star hosting a disc with a ~60 au cavity, where previous work based on Gaia astrometry and VLT/SPHERE imaging suggested an unseen companion. Using high-resolution VLT/ESPRESSO spectra and least-squares deconvolution (LSD), we analysed radial velocity variations over 327 days, finding significant line-profile variations with a ~3.75-day period, consistent with previous photometric estimates. The variations are compatible with a close binary at ~0.04 au with mass ratio q ~ 0.6. Combining the RVs with ALMA dynamical mass estimates (13CO and C18O) reveals a strongly misaligned system: the nearly face-on binary (i ~ 13°) is misaligned with both the inner and outer discs (i ~ 50° and ~ 70°, respectively). The orbital separation is consistent with the size of the inner disc, whose inner rim at 0.12 au is measured by VLTI/GRAVITY, suggesting a strongly warped disc. However, the short orbital period is at odds with the derived eccentricity (e ~ 0.23). To explore alternative explanations, we assessed the impact of starspots: although the LSD profile deformations can be reproduced by several cool-spot configurations, a 15% scatter in the derived v sin i values, together with the absence of a significant periodic signal, suggests that spots alone cannot explain the observed variability. Since neither hypothesis can be ruled out, we recommend future combined radial velocity and interferometric monitoring.

Accepted for publication in A&A – arXiv:2609.30038

The aim of this study is to constrain the dynamical masses of the four confirmed transiting planets orbiting the young star V1298 Tau (20 ± 10 Myr), with orbital periods Pb ~ 24.1 d, Pc ~ 8.2 d, Pd ~ 12.4 d and Pe ~ 48.7 d, using a homogeneous radial velocity dataset. This system is a key benchmark for testing models of planet formation and evolution.

We analysed more than 380 high-resolution HARPS-N spectra collected over 4.5 years. To account for the strong stellar activity and for the planet-planet interactions inferred from transit timing, radial velocities extracted with two different approaches were analysed by combining N-body simulations with multidimensional Gaussian-process regression, and by testing a set of spectroscopic and photometric activity diagnostics to mitigate the variability due to magnetic activity.

The mass determinations turned out to be sensitive to the radial velocity extraction method and to the activity diagnostics. For some models, masses were measured at 3.5–4σ for planets b (0.52 +0.12−0.14, 0.65 +0.21−0.18, 0.67 ± 0.16 and 0.78 +0.19−0.20 MJup) and e (0.40 +0.14−0.13, 0.66 +0.17−0.18 and 0.71 ± 0.20 MJup). These values are compatible with giant planets and significantly higher than those recently derived from transit timing variations (TTVs) alone, which instead pointed to very low-density (super-puffy) planets. Injection-and-recovery simulations moderately support this conclusion for planet b. For planets c and d, mainly updated upper limits on the mass are provided. This study is an exploratory analysis of the complex challenge of measuring masses in a multi-planet system with high stellar activity.

Characterizing stellar flares in Ariel targets: activity analysis and transit contamination

G. Galletta, S. Colombo, G. Micela

Characterizing stellar flares in Ariel targets: activity analysis and transit contamination

G. Galletta, S. Colombo, G. Micela
Accepted for publication in RASTI – arXiv:2608.16301

Stellar flares are sudden releases of magnetic energy that can distort exoplanet transit photometry and transmission spectroscopy, biasing estimates of planetary radius, transit timing and atmospheric characterisation. Understanding flare activity in Ariel targets is therefore essential to identify stars where flares could compromise observations, and to characterise the radiative environment that drives atmospheric escape and photochemistry. We analysed 290 Ariel target stars using TESS light curves. Flares were identified through iterative Gaussian-process detrending, and their energy distributions were modelled with two-segment power laws. Injection-recovery tests with synthetic flares, run through the full pipeline, quantified completeness and detection biases. We detected 15,857 flares across 1,638 TESS sectors, with 2 to 86 events per sector. We defined a normalised flare index, GF.01, to compare activity across stellar luminosities. About 3% of the sample shows enhanced flare activity (GF.01 > 1). AU Mic and HD 28109 show a high probability of flare contamination during transit observations. GF.01 is anticorrelated with stellar bolometric luminosity, indicating stronger relative flare emission in less luminous stars. AU Mic is an extreme case: four of the five observed transits of AU Mic b are affected by flares, consistent with statistical expectations. We validated the framework by comparing predicted contamination probabilities with the flares actually observed in a representative subset of transits, finding agreement within the uncertainties. These results confirm that energetic flares can significantly affect transit observations and provide quantitative guidelines for Ariel target selection and analysis strategies.

Precise mass and radius measurements of small exoplanets, such as super-Earths and sub-Neptunes, are essential to constrain their mean density and formation history, and are a prerequisite for subsequent atmospheric characterisation. The ArMS Large Programme, carried out within the GAPS collaboration with the HARPS-N spectrograph at the Telescopio Nazionale Galileo, aims to confirm and characterise transition planets in the so-called “radius valley” through high-precision radial velocity (RV) measurements. The ultimate goal is to identify ideal targets for atmospheric follow-up with next-generation facilities such as the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) and the future ESA Ariel mission. Here we present the first mass determination of a sub-Neptune based entirely on ArMS data, for the validated planet TOI-4602 b. We monitored TOI-4602, which hosts a short-period sub-Neptune (P ~ 3.98 days) detected by TESS, and performed a joint analysis of the RVs and TESS photometry to derive the system parameters. TOI-4602 b is a sub-Neptune with a radius of 2.5 ± 0.2 R⊕ and a mass of 5.5 ± 0.9 M⊕. Its mean density (ρ = 2.1 ± 0.6 g/cm³) and atmospheric evolution models suggest that the planet retains a thin gaseous envelope while evolving towards a bare core, consistent with its location just above the radius valley. Thanks to the brightness of the host star (V = 8.4) and its high Transmission Spectroscopy Metric (TSM = 140 ± 54), TOI-4602 b is a priority target for atmospheric characterisation. Simulations show that JWST and Ariel will be able to constrain its atmospheric composition, offering a unique view of the processes driving the transition between sub-Neptunes and super-Earths.

True masses using RV data with Hipparcos and Gaia astrometry

True masses using RV data with Hipparcos and Gaia astrometry

G. Piccinini, A. Petralia, A. Sozzetti, S. Benatti, D. Gandolfi, G. Micela
Accepted for publication in A&A

Long-period companions are detected and characterised by radial velocity surveys with long time baselines. Combining Doppler time series with astrometric data, in particular with the proper motion anomaly technique, makes it possible to place tight constraints on the orbital inclination and true mass of these companions. In this work we present a model that combines Hipparcos and Gaia astrometry with radial velocity measurements to constrain the orbital inclinations and true masses of long-period companions, and we reanalyse a small sample of targets not yet studied with this combined approach. The method relies on the simultaneous modelling of proper motion anomalies and radial velocities, together with a sensitivity-curve analysis. This approach not only verifies the orbital parameters but also provides valuable insight into the planetary systems. The new analyses reveal that some targets classified as brown dwarfs or low-mass stars are actually planets. HD 5388 b and HD 6718 b are likely planets with masses of 3.2 (−0.2/+0.3) MJup and 2.4 (−0.2/+0.3) MJup, respectively. HD 141937 b is probably a planet, but the current data do not constrain its true mass precisely. HD 16760 b is a brown dwarf and probably has a second companion. 30 Ari B b turns out to be of stellar origin, although an additional stellar companion may affect the reliability of this result. For HD 148427 b, HD 96127 b and HIP 65891 b we determined a range of orbital inclinations.
