Andrea Damonte’s XMM-Newton proposal accepted

Andrea Damonte’s XMM-Newton proposal “X-ray observations of two stars hosting small exoplanets”, for two 19 ks observations, has been accepted. The goal is to characterise the high-energy spectra of GJ 3470 and GJ 3090, in order to correctly interpret observations of the metastable helium triplet in the atmospheres of their planets. The joint analysis will allow us to assess atmospheric escape processes and quantify the impact of stellar XUV emission on the observed signals. For GJ 3470, already observed by XMM-Newton, the aim is to verify the stability of the high-energy stellar flux, since the variability seen in the helium signal could be due to changes in stellar activity rather than to the planetary atmosphere. GJ 3090 has never been characterised at medium resolution (apart from a marginal eROSITA detection): this will be the first X-ray spectral characterisation of the star, which hosts the second-smallest sub-Neptune with detected helium absorption.

Long-term X-ray variability of the multiple-planet host L 98-59: hints of an activity cycle

High-energy X-ray and UV (XUV) irradiation can transform planetary atmospheres through photoevaporation and photochemistry. This is especially relevant for M dwarfs, whose habitable zones lie within a few hundredths of an astronomical unit. Transiting planets around M dwarfs offer the opportunity to study their properties and habitability conditions. L 98-59 is an M3 dwarf hosting six Earth-like planets, two of them in the habitable zone. X-ray observations in 2020 and 2021 revealed significant flares above a quiescent luminosity of 4–10 × 1026 erg s−1. We present the results of two short XMM-Newton observations, part of a monitoring campaign to detect long-term X-ray variability and activity cycles. In October 2024 the quiescent X-ray luminosity was ~5.9 × 1025 erg s−1, while in February 2025 it was about 6.3 × 1026 erg s−1. We speculate that the star was at an activity minimum at the end of 2024, near a maximum in 2021 and at an intermediate phase in 2025. We suggest a period of about 2 years and a peak-to-peak amplitude of about 10, the largest among stars with a known X-ray cycle apart from the Sun. We also infer that even the outermost planet in the habitable zone, L 98-59 f, receives an X-ray dose 100 to 1600 times that of the Earth in the XMM-Newton band.

Empirical prediction of plasma emission measure distributions and X-EUV spectra of late-type stars

Empirical prediction of plasma emission measure distributions and X-EUV spectra of late-type stars

Antonio Maggio, Ignazio Pillitteri, Jorge Sanz-Forcada, Giuseppina Micela
Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

This paper presents a new method to address a long-standing problem: how to predict the X-ray and EUV spectrum of a solar-like or, more generally, late-type star when no high-resolution spectroscopy is available. This information is crucial for studies of the irradiation of planetary atmospheres and of circumstellar discs around young objects, since high-energy radiation drives photochemistry and photoevaporation. In practice, direct X-ray spectral measurements are limited by the sensitivity of current spectrographs on satellites such as XMM-Newton or Chandra, and usually only the flux integrated over the soft X-ray band is available; in the EUV there are currently no operating spectrographs at all. We present an integrated analysis of a reference sample of about thirty stars with X-ray and FUV (Hubble Space Telescope) spectra, which allowed us to reconstruct the plasma distribution in their outer atmospheres from 104 K (chromosphere) to 107.5 K (corona). The shape of these distributions can be predicted from the soft X-ray surface flux and the spectral type alone; the work also shows that FGK stars behave differently from M stars. These distributions are the basis for computing synthetic spectra over the whole XUV band (1–1200+ Å), assuming emission from optically thin hot plasma. The study also estimates the systematic error, linked to the assumed chemical abundances, on the integrated X-ray (5–100 Å) and EUV (100–920 Å) fluxes derived from the synthetic spectra. Finally, the paper provides instructions and software, available to the community, to compute synthetic plasma emission measure distributions.

Exploring short-term stellar activity in dM stars: a volume-limited perspective

G. Galletta, S. Colombo, L. Prisinzano, G. Micela

Exploring short-term stellar activity in dM stars: a volume-limited perspective

G. Galletta, S. Colombo, L. Prisinzano, G. Micela
Accepted for publication in A&A

Flares are sudden and intense manifestations of stellar activity occurring on short timescales and releasing vast amounts of energy. Studying them is crucial, since the high-energy radiation they emit can significantly alter circumstellar environments and affect planetary atmospheres through photoevaporation and photochemistry. M-type stars are particularly relevant because of their high flare frequency and their potential to host exoplanets in their habitable zones. This study analyses flare activity in a representative, unbiased sample of M stars. We selected M stars within 10 parsecs of the Sun from Gaia DR3 and analysed TESS light curves from sectors 0 to 76 (where available) with an iterative Gaussian-process fitting technique to remove long-term variations and accurately isolate flares. In total, 173 stars and 17,229 flares were analysed. Flare energies start from ~1029 erg, with durations between 2 and 8000 seconds. The energy distribution was modelled with single- and double-slope fits, yielding average slopes of −0.79 ± 0.64 and −1.23 ± 1.32, respectively. A new activity indicator, the Flare Energy Index (GF.01), was introduced to quantify flare frequency across stars; it revealed two populations, with fainter stars showing fewer high-energy flares and brighter stars more frequently producing low-energy flares. Finally, two highly active stars, G 227-22 and G 258-33, observed by TESS in many sectors, were studied in detail to assess the variability of their activity over time and their energy distributions.

Stellar X-ray-UV coronal activity and its impact on planets

S. Colombo, D. Locci, R. Spinelli, A. Petralia, C. Cecchi Pestellini, G. Micela
Capitolo nel volume Handbook of Exoplanets

The star, often characterised by intense energetic radiation and energetic stellar winds, imposes formidable constraints on planetary evolution. A deep understanding of the star and of its interaction with the planet is therefore essential to correctly interpret planetary processes and climate. Star-planet interaction is a vast field involving many areas of physics: this chapter focuses on high energies, in particular on the impact of high-energy radiation on the dynamics and chemistry of exoplanets and on the role of atmospheric photoevaporation.

PAStar: a model for stellar surface from the Sun to active stars

Accepted for publication in A&A

Exoplanet characterisation requires an in-depth understanding of the host star, as it is a source of noise that can affect the planetary parameters derived from transit depths or atmospheric characterisation. In this work we present PAStar, a model that describes the stellar photosphere in the presence of spots and/or faculae and computes its spectro-photometry. The model was validated with solar data and compared with another model from the literature, confirming the consistency of the results. An accurate description of stellar activity is a crucial step in many astrophysical contexts: our method provides a versatile tool to describe stellar activity dominated by spots and faculae, and is an important step forward in the study of interactions between exoplanets and their host stars.

This study of the atmosphere of TOI-5398 b, carried out within the GAPS programme with the high-resolution spectrograph HARPS-N, provides new insights into exoplanet atmospheric processes, with a specific focus on photoinduced evaporation. The detection of the Hα line and the He I triplet, along with the Na I doublet, provides valuable data confirming theoretical predictions of atmospheric escape. The study also gives a clearer view of the vertical distribution of the elements: He I and Na I lie in the outermost layers of the atmosphere, while Hα is located in a deeper region. The novelty lies in confirming these features in a hot-Saturn-like planet rather than in an ultra-hot Jupiter. Moreover, the detection of the Na I doublet in a relatively cool atmosphere (947 K) improves our knowledge of the composition of cooler exoplanet atmospheres. The combination of He I and Hα in a single system is rare and strengthens models predicting photoinduced evaporation. The observed signals also suggest atmospheric winds, which could explain the extension of these elements and even point to a possible comet-like tail of TOI-5398 b. These results will support future work to refine atmospheric models and better understand atmospheric escape.

The GAPS Programme at TNG. Atmospheric characterisation of KELT-9 b via single-line analysis: detection of six H I Balmer lines, Na I, Ca I, Ca II, Fe I, Fe II, Mg I, Ti II, Sc II, and Cr II

In this work we analysed six primary transits of the ultra-hot Jupiter KELT-9 b obtained with the HARPS-N high-resolution spectrograph within the GAPS2 project, to characterise its atmosphere via single-line analysis. We extracted the transmission spectrum of each line by comparing the master out-of-transit spectrum with the in-transit spectra and computing the weighted average of the tomography in the planet rest frame. We corrected for centre-to-limb variation and the Rossiter-McLaughlin effect by modelling the region of the stellar disc occulted by the planet and subtracting it from the master-out spectrum.

We detected all six Balmer lines observable in the HARPS-N range, from Hα to Hζ, with significance above 5σ, as well as lines of the metal species Na I, Ca I, Ca II, Fe I, Fe II, Mg I, Ti II, Sc II and Cr II. This is the first detection in an exoplanet atmosphere of the Hε and Hζ lines and of individual Sc II and Cr II lines. Our detections are supported by a comparison with published synthetic transmission spectra of KELT-9 b that account for non-local thermodynamic equilibrium effects.

The results show a systematic blueshift due to night-side to day-side winds. The single-line analysis allowed us not only to confirm the presence of atomic species but also to characterise the local stratification of the atmosphere: combining the height distribution of the detected species with the measured velocity shifts, we derived the height distribution of the winds. Finally, the rotational broadening of the different species supports the prediction of a tidally locked planet rotating as a rigid body.

In this work we analysed high-resolution spectroscopic observations of a young solar-mass star hosting two transiting planets: currently the youngest known multi-planet system. The X-ray and far-ultraviolet observations, taken almost simultaneously with XMM-Newton and the Hubble Space Telescope, aimed to reconstruct the distribution of hot plasma in the star’s outer atmosphere, in order to compute its extreme-ultraviolet emission (EUV, 100–1216 Å), which cannot be measured directly for lack of suitable space instrumentation. Reconstructing the full electromagnetic emission, from the optical to soft X-rays, is necessary to study the influence of stellar radiation on exoplanet atmospheres. X+EUV radiation in particular drives significant photochemistry and photoevaporation, which are of great interest for understanding planet formation and evolution and, ultimately, the irradiation conditions during the early development of life on “other worlds” orbiting Sun-like stars.

The study also tested several “scaling laws” proposed in the literature to estimate EUV emission from X-ray emission without direct observations. Our results show that these laws are still affected by uncertainties that deserve further investigation.

Spot modeling through multiband photometry: analysis of V1298 Tau

Spot modeling through multiband photometry: analysis of V1298 Tau

Stellar activity, mainly spots and faculae, is one of the main sources of noise in exoplanet observations, because it affects both spectroscopy and photometry. To study young planetary systems and their evolution, we need to model the activity of their often very active host stars in order to remove it from the data. Using multiband photometry, we aim to reconstruct the geometry of active regions (spots, faculae or a mix of the two) and estimate their temperature. We analysed multiband photometric observations of V1298 Tau obtained with the 80 cm Marcon telescope of the Osservatorio Polifunzionale del Chianti, assuming that the modulation observed in the different bands is due to the temperature contrast of spots and faculae with respect to the photosphere. We derived the geometric configuration and a temperature range for the active regions of V1298 Tau, which turned out to be made of spots and faculae present at the same time in a time-variable ratio. Finally, we tested the method on solar data, verifying that we can measure the size of the dominant active region and its mean effective temperature.

The time evolution of the ultraviolet habitable zone

The time evolution of the ultraviolet habitable zone

R. Spinelli, F. Borsa, G. Ghirlanda, G. Ghisellini, F. Haardt, F. Rigamonti
Accepted for publication in MNRAS Letters – read the story on Media INAF (in Italian)

Recent experiments suggest that a minimum dose of ultraviolet radiation may have been crucial for forming some building blocks of life, such as RNA; on the other hand, too much UV is harmful to life as we know it, since it can destroy many molecules, including DNA. On this basis, one can define a ring-shaped zone around a star where a planet receives a UV flux suitable for the formation and presence of life. In a previous paper (The ultraviolet habitable zone of exoplanets, MNRAS) we analysed Swift UV observations of stars hosting planets in the “classical” habitable zone, where the temperature allows liquid water on the surface, and concluded that potentially habitable planets around M dwarfs (the most common stars in the Galaxy) lie outside the UV habitable zone, because their stars are currently too faint in the UV to trigger the formation of some RNA precursors. In this new work we tested whether these compounds could have formed during the early phases of these stars, which are now older than 3 billion years. Combining Swift data with GALEX observations of young stellar groups, we derived the average time evolution of UV luminosity for stars of different masses. For all stars in the sample, the classical and UV habitable zones overlap now or did so in the past, except for very cool stars (below 2800 K, such as TRAPPIST-1). The degree and duration of the overlap are greater for hotter (more massive) stars and for atmospheres more transparent to UV. The study suggests that the conditions for forming some building blocks of life are, or have been, more common in our Galaxy than previously thought. An interesting case is Proxima Centauri, our closest star: compared with similar M dwarfs, its two habitable zones overlapped for much longer, almost 3 billion years.

A reanalysis of the LHS 1140 b atmosphere observed with the Hubble Space Telescope

Accettato per la pubblicazione su Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society (MNRAS)

A reanalysis of the LHS 1140 b atmosphere observed with the Hubble Space Telescope

Accepted for publication in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society (MNRAS)

The super-Earth LHS 1140 b is an interesting target for atmospheric observations, since it is close to the habitable zone of its star and lies in the region of the small-planet radius distribution thought to mark the transition between planets with and without atmospheres. Observations of its primary transit with WFC3 on board the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) revealed a modulation in the transmission spectrum compatible with water, which however could also be due to stellar activity. We present a detailed analysis of the WFC3/HST observations to understand whether this modulation could be caused by unocculted starspots. Our analysis strongly suggests that LHS 1140 is a rather quiet star with subsolar [Fe/H] and enhanced α elements: we therefore rule out that the planetary spectrum is affected by unocculted spots and faculae. This work shows the importance of properly modelling the stellar spectrum, including the stellar composition, when analysing transit observations. Finally, we modelled the atmosphere of LHS 1140 b to retrieve its composition; however, the low resolution and narrow spectral range of the HST data prevent us from determining whether the spectral features are due to water or to other molecules.

High-energy stellar radiation deeply affects the chemistry of planetary atmospheres, driving departures from chemical equilibrium. While the upper layers are dominated by ionisation from extreme-ultraviolet radiation, deeper in the atmosphere molecular abundances are controlled by a characteristic X-ray-dominated chemistry, mainly driven by an energetic secondary electron cascade. In this work we aim to identify photochemically induced molecular fingerprints in the transmission spectra of a giant planet orbiting a solar-type star. We developed a numerical code that synthesises transmission spectra at arbitrary resolution, using updated infrared photoabsorption cross-sections; chemical abundances are computed with a photochemical model tailored to high-energy ionisation processes. We find that, for high levels of stellar activity, synthetic spectra at both low and high resolution show significant, potentially observable out-of-equilibrium signatures, arising mainly from CO, CH4, C2H2 and HCN.

The enigmatic dance of the HD 189733A system: a quest for accretion

The enigmatic dance of the HD 189733A system: a quest for accretion

Accepted for publication in A&A – arXiv:2401.03962

Several studies suggest that the emission properties of a star can be affected by its interaction with a nearby planet, but the actual observability of these effects is still debated. An example is the HD 189733A system, where some features of the emission have been interpreted as signs of star-planet interaction, while other studies attribute them to coronal activity. In this work we investigate whether the observed X-ray flares, which appear to be in phase with the planet’s orbital period, could be due to accretion of the planetary wind onto the stellar surface or to the interaction between planetary and stellar winds. We developed a 3D magnetohydrodynamic model of the system, including the star, its hot Jupiter and their winds, accounting for gravity and for the magnetic fields of both bodies. In the cases examined, accretion is possible only with field strengths of 5 G for the star and 1 G for the planet: then Rayleigh-Taylor instabilities (RTIs) form an accretion column connecting star and planet, which remains stable for the whole simulation, with an accretion rate of about 1012 g/s and a mean density of about 107 cm−3. In the other cases the column does not form, because the RTI is suppressed by the stronger fields. The synthesised X-ray emission of the shocked planetary wind ranges from 5 × 1023 to 1024 erg/s; in the accretion case, the emission from the impact region cannot be distinguished from coronal activity.

Intrinsic variability due to magnetic activity, typical of young stars, is one of the main challenges in detecting and characterising exoplanets: stellar activity can affect photometric and spectroscopic measurements to the point of hampering planet detection. We present SpotCCF, a method to model the stellar photosphere and its inhomogeneities (spots) in young, active, rapidly rotating stars. Based on the cross-correlation function (CCF), it extracts information on the spot configuration on the stellar surface. Within the GAPS project we analysed more than 300 HARPS-N spectra of V1298 Tau obtained at the Telescopio Nazionale Galileo.

With SpotCCF we derived the spot configuration (latitude, longitude and projected filling factor) and new radial velocity time series. The deformations of the CCF profiles of V1298 Tau are modulated with stellar rotation, supporting the hypothesis that they are caused by spots, and suggest differential rotation, slower at latitudes near the pole. The method also improved the radial velocity extraction, with a significantly lower scatter than the commonly used TERRA pipeline.
