Sistemi Esoplanetari (gruppo EXOPA)

🇬🇧 English version at the bottom of the page

The study of exoplanets — planets orbiting stars other than the Sun — has revolutionised our view of the Universe. Thousands have been confirmed to date, revealing a planetary population with an extraordinary variety of architectures and extreme environments: from hot Jupiters (gas giants on very tight orbits) to super-Earths (rocky planets with complex atmospheres). Studying the structure and composition of these systems allows us to address fundamental questions about how planets form and about the origin and evolution of our own Solar System.

This is the context of the EXOPA research group at INAF – Osservatorio Astronomico di Palermo. Through a strongly multidisciplinary approach, the team studies exoplanetary systems to unravel the complex interplay between the stellar environment and planetary architecture.

Research lines

The group's research covers a broad range of contemporary astronomy, combining its methods:

  • Detection and fundamental parameters: discovery of new planets and precise determination of their fundamental physical and orbital parameters (period, mass, radius, density).
  • Stellar activity: observational and modelling study of the magnetic and radiative phenomena of the host star, essential to isolate planetary signals and to understand the environment in which planets evolve.
  • Atmospheric science: low- and high-resolution spectroscopic analysis of the composition and dynamics of exoplanetary atmospheres.
  • Star-planet interaction: study of the physical, chemical and magnetic effects induced by the host star on the surrounding planetary environment.
  • Laboratory simulations of planetary atmospheres: reproduction and analysis of planetary atmospheric conditions in controlled laboratory environments.
  • Technologies for space instrumentation: design and development of advanced instrumentation and components for next-generation space missions and ground-based observatories.
